On Tuesday, due to the heavy rain, the previous night on Tuesday fell a huge boulder downhill on the streets of mosques in the city of Vaniyambadi in Tirupattura. No one was injured in the incident.
Around 6 am the inhabitants heard a loud noise. They saw a huge boulder on a narrow section. The houses were not located on the way through which the boulder turned down the hill. “We were shocked when we saw such a large rock on our street. Many houses are located near the foot. Security measures need to be taken to prevent such incidents,” said B. Subha, resident.
On the basis of warnings, the city police and civil officials Vaniyambadi inspected this place. The workers were deployed by municipalities to reduce and remove the boulder.
“This is the first such incident in the area, which is not a place susceptible to landslide. We have recommended residents to move to safer areas because the region is witnessing regular rain,” said K. Raghuraman, commissioner of the village of Vaniyambadi, Hindu.
City officials said there were about 1,500 families at the foot. Many of them illegally built houses on a hill. The initial investigation of police and civic officials revealed that the resident dug a pit on Monday to build another room of his house in the hills.
Civic officials say that construction activities could release the land around the boulder and led to its fall downhill. “We asked for income officials and collectors to demolish hills and relocate the affected families to avoid any unfavorable incidents in the future,” the city official said.
