In a heartwarming gesture that combines celebration with social responsibility, Kalaburagi’s wedding invitation has garnered widespread appreciation for its meaningful message – “Please donate books only”.
An initiative to strengthen government school libraries and encourage a culture of reading among students turns a personal celebration into a purposeful social campaign.
The wedding planned for November 17, 2025 is that of a young doctor whose family has decided to celebrate the occasion by spreading the joy of learning.
The groom’s father, Anandteerth V. Joshi, a former employee of the Education Department, got the idea and shared it with the owner of Vasavi Offset Printers, who guided him in designing an inspirational invitation inviting guests to join the ‘Book Donation’.
Mr. Joshi, who has completed 39 years of service in the Education Ministry and retired recently, told The Hindu that he always tried to introduce small but meaningful reforms in the ministry during his tenure.
Explaining the idea behind the initiative, Mr. Joshi said that it aims to strengthen government school libraries and help students preparing for SSLC exams. He has already compiled a list of 35 volumes of studies to be donated to eight government schools in the district.
“Even though it’s a very small contribution, it can inspire others to donate things that students really need,” he said.
To make the idea practical, Mr. Joshi organized a ₹1,000 book stall at the wedding venue where guests can purchase and donate books related to the school curriculum. He assured that all unsold books would be bought by him and added to the donations.
