Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) has launched a special awareness drive across Namma Metro trains to promote commuter etiquette and address behavior that causes inconvenience to fellow passengers. This comes amid repeated complaints about loud music, eating on buses, abuse of priority seating and consumption of tobacco products that officials say affect the comfort or safety of other commuters in the shared public space.
As part of the drive, BMRCL has deployed special on-board teams comprising Home Guards to sensitize passengers and counsel those violating basic travel norms.
Data from the year-long exercise shows 57,538 commuters were found playing loud music on trains, with 37,038 advised to take priority seats without freeing them for the elderly, pregnant women or people with disabilities. Additionally, 1,907 commuters were found to have consumed food in subway cars and 1,677 were caught chewing tobacco products.
In a statement, BMRCL warned commuters that such acts could be punished under the Railway Meters (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002.
