At least one person was killed in a crude bomb explosion at the Muktijoddha Sangsad Bangladesh Central Command in the Mogbazar Mor area of Dhaka, Bangladesh on Wednesday evening. The incident took place around 7:00 pm when some unknown persons threw a cube bomb from a nearby flyover.
Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad is a headquarters of veterans of the 1971 liberation war in the Moghbazar area of Dhaka.
A crude bomb hurled by unidentified men from a flyover hit a person who died on the spot, Inspector (Operations) of Hatirjheel Police Station Md Mohiuddin was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.
The deceased was identified as one Siam – an employee of a private shop who was having a cup of tea at a roadside stall under the flyover.
An investigation into the incident has been launched.
The incident comes a day before the arrival of Bangladesh Nationalist Party incumbent Tarique Rahman, heir to the influential Zia family, who is due to return home on Thursday, ending his nearly 17 years in exile in London.
Tarique Rahman, the 60-year-old son of ailing former prime minister Khaleda Zia, has emerged as the prime ministerial candidate in the upcoming general elections in February. “It will be a defining political moment,” said BNP spokesperson Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury earlier said law enforcement agencies have been instructed to maintain maximum vigilance and take maximum security measures.
Authorities deployed a “double-layered” security cordon combining state and party measures in Dhaka ahead of Rahman’s arrival. Also read | India-Bangladesh relations hit turbulence as visa services were suspended | 5 latest updates
The incident also came days after student leader Osman Hadi was killed in last year’s anti-government protests that sparked violence in parts of the country.
A Hindu man was also killed by a mob in Dhaka a few days ago for allegedly making “blasphemous” comments. Dipu Chandra Das was severely beaten, after which his body was hung from a tree and set on fire.
