
An explosion was heard outside the Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office in Chandigarh on Wednesday evening. The incident led to panic and police cordoned off the area, news agency PTI reported.
No casualties were reported.
The explosion was heard around 5 pm, state BJP media cell chief Vineet Joshi told ANI. According to him, the scooter parked in front of the building in Sector 37 was damaged.
Meanwhile, teams of CFSL and Chandigarh police officials conducted an investigation outside the Punjab BJP office in Sector 37 in Punjab after a suspicious blast was heard, news agency ANI reported.
What did the police say?
Senior police officers, including Senior Superintendent of Police Kanwardip Kaur, as well as a team from the Central Forensic Laboratory rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.
Kanwardeep Kaur said, “Around 5 pm, we got information that an explosion was heard near the BJP office in Sector 37. Our teams have reached here and prima facie it appears that a small, crude type of bomb has been thrown here. Teams from NIA, FSL, Chandigarh Police, Crime Squad and Crime Cell have reached here. We are investigating…”
It was not clear what happened. Further details are awaited.
“Scooty, car damaged”
BJP Media Incharge Vinit Joshi said, “… There was an explosion here at around 5 pm and a lot of smoke was seen. An atmosphere of panic prevailed after the blast.”
“Scooty, the car has been damaged. That’s a problem. The explosion near the party office is a cause for concern,” he said.
Joshi added, “The BJP State Wrking President was staying here for the last 4 days and the blast that took place during this time is a serious concern…”
‘Too bad’
Reacting to the incident, Union Minister SP Singh Baghel said, “This is unfortunate. There is no place for violence in a democracy. Although it was a low-intensity blast, agencies are taking it seriously… Of course, the police and agencies will investigate and action will be taken against the culprits.”
