Maharashtra civic polls: Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) social media handle on X didn’t miss an opportunity to take a dig at Rahul Gandhi’s LoP with a ‘Prathistha, Parampara’ meme as the BJP–Shiv Sena Mahayuti looms as the winner and the Congress is hot on its heels as the counting of votes continues.
A 19-second video meme that swaps Varun Dhawan’s face for Gandhi’s with the caption “Mummy me phirse choice haar gaya” (“Mummy, I lost the election again”) has gone viral.
BJP’s Khandani chor on Gandhi
BJP’s scathing attack on Gandhi used “khandani chor” taunts. He accuses him of misleading the public by questioning the process of civic elections in Maharashtra.
Reacting strongly to Gandhi’s comments, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla took to X to criticize him, saying, “Bahana (excuse) brigade back! Accept defeat before counting is over?” He further accused Gandhi of undermining the election process and claimed that he was once again trying to mislead the public. “Rahul Back to what he does best – discredit, misrepresent and misinform. ‘Khandani chor’ now refuting Thackerays claims again,” Poonawalla lashed out.
This comes after Gandhi claimed that “election chori (theft) is an anti-national act”, along with his claim that the Election Commission was “gassing” citizens amid a controversy surrounding the quality of “indelible” ink used in markers during the Maharashtra civic polls on Thursday.
A total of 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra held polls on Thursday.
BMC elections
Meanwhile, as per the latest trends at 5 pm, the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance had a saffron lead in 130 of the 227 seats in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, comfortably ahead of the Thackeray brothers’ camp, which was leading with 71 seats. The BJP was set to become the single largest party in India’s richest civic body with 93 seats, while its ally Shiv Sena was ahead on 27, according to ANI.
Among the opposition, Shiv Sena (UBT) led with 62 seats, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) with nine, Congress with 14 and NCP (SP) with one seat.
