The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership on Sunday (March 1, 2026) launched the West Bengal election campaign with four Parivartan Yatras (March for Change) from four corners of the state.
BJP National President Nitin Nabin along with State BJP President Samik Bhattacharya with the flag from the Parivartan Yatra of Cooch Behar in North Bengal. Party leaders alleged that North Bengal remained neglected despite repeated promises by the Trinamool Congress government and that the administrative functioning at Uttar Kanya, the North Bengal Secretariat, remained ineffective. The BJP leadership promised the people of North Bengal equal regional development, infrastructure expansion and administrative accountability. Mr. Nabin said the Parivartan Yatras launched across the state would cover a distance of about 5,000 km with the promise of a “new Bengal” for the people of the state.
Former BJP President and Union Minister JP Nadda along with BJP MP and External Affairs Minister Sukanta Majumdar flagged off another Parivartan Yatra from Krishnanagar in Nadia. Inaugurating the yatra, Mr. Nadda said industries in various sectors from coal to steel to heavy industries to jute mills in the state had declined during the Trinamool Congress regime. The Union minister said it was the responsibility of the people to oust the government under whose watch the rape and murder was committed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari flagged off another Parivartan Sankalpa Yatra from Garbet in Paschim Medinipur. Targeting the Trinamool Congress government at several points, Mr. Pradhan said the people of West Bengal had decided to change an anti-poor, anti-women and anti-corrupt government that encouraged cross-border infiltration.
Union Minister for Women and Child Development Annapurna Devi and former Union Minister Smriti Irani addressed a rally at Kulti in Asansol and flagged off the next Parivartan Yatra to cover the southwestern parts of the state. Recalling incidents of crime against women, including the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Union minister said the state had become a safe haven for criminals.
On March 2, five more Parivartan Yatras will be marked in the state. On February 27, the BJP leadership launched the theme song and march on the Parivartan Yatras route in the state.
All nine yatras will conclude with a public rally by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a brigade parade in Kolkata. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to join the Parivartan Yatra on Monday (March 2) and is likely to address a public meeting at Raidighi in South 24 Parganas.
With the West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections likely to be announced in the next few days, BJP leaders have called off Parivartan Yatras with the slogan “Paltano Dorkar Chai BJP Sorkar (Needs change and wants BJP government)”.
