With the Greater Bengaluru Authority elections coming up, the BJP-JD(S) coalition partners have decided to set up separate coordination committees for the GBA region and Karnataka to effectively handle various issues of the government.
The decision to this effect was taken after a team of BJP leaders led by state president BY Vijayendra held a meeting with JD(S) leader and Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy in Bengaluru on Tuesday.
After the meeting, Mr. Vijayendra told reporters that the committees would be formed in eight to 10 days.
The members of the committee will be finalized after discussions with BJP party leaders, while Mr. Kumaraswamy has agreed to provide a list of names of JD(S) leaders, Mr. Vijayendra said.
Mr. Kumaraswamy suggested the formation of separate committees for Bengaluru in the wake of the fast-approaching GBA elections, he added.
Leaders are understood to have agreed to close coordination for the GBA elections as well as elections to be held for Council seats in 2026.
Building pressure
Coalition officials have also reportedly decided to strategize to put pressure on the government inside and outside the legislature on various issues.
Sources said the topics that came up for discussion included the targeting of the RSS by the Congress government, disputes between government officials and industrialists over Bengaluru’s infrastructure issues, the Bidadi Integrated Township controversy and Bengaluru’s crumbling infrastructure.
Tension in the cadre
Based on the reported tension and lack of trust between the workers and local leaders of the two coalition partners, the leaders have reportedly decided to make efforts to ensure a smooth relationship at the cadre level.
Meanwhile, Mr. Vijayendra alleged that ministers were reacting with arrogance to the concerns raised by captains of industry over Bengaluru’s infrastructural woes. His father and then Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa welcomed criticism and suggestions from captains of industry. “Mr. Yediyurappa invited industry leader Mohandas Pai to his home after Mr. Pai publicly expressed some concerns,” noted Mr. Vijayendra.
