The expansion of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in recent years without corresponding restructuring of its organizational set-up has put a heavy strain on the party leadership. With a new national team and a change in the cabinet, discussions on organizational restructuring are said to be imminent.

The proposals included appointing members of the Parliamentary Board, excluding Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP president Nitin Nabin as in-charge of specific regions of the country on the lines of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) kshetra pracharaks (regional organisers), and increasing the BJP’s total from the current national office of 0.45vil.

Many of these proposals were discussed on Monday. First, there were meetings between BJP general secretary (organization) BL Santosh and senior RSS leaders, including sah sarkaryavah (joint general secretary) Arun Kumar, before a separate high-level interaction at Defense Minister Rajnath Singh’s residence later in the day. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President Nitin Nabin, BJP Joint General Secretary (Organisation) Shiv Prakash and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan were present in the meeting which lasted over four hours.

According to BJP sources, the discussions centered on the restructuring of the party organization at the national level and possible changes in its functioning. The issue of NEET examination was also reviewed in detail as well as the political situation in the states where the examinations are to be conducted including Punjab and other ongoing political developments.

Sources said key organizational issues discussed included the possible reconstitution of the BJP parliamentary committee, introduction of a new system of regional commissioners, strengthening of the party’s grievance redressal mechanism and increasing the participation of women in the organisation.

There was also discussion about expanding the number of BJP officials as well as the party’s national executive and national council. The number of headquarters bearers, currently around 45, may be increased to around 60, according to sources.

The idea of appointing eight to nine regional commissioners from among members of the parliamentary council has been discussed for a long time as part of a broader exercise aimed at decentralizing power and strengthening organizational supervision.

Similarly, proposals to integrate the grievance redressal mechanism with regional charges were also considered. Another key area of interest was increasing the representation of women in organizational roles.

In addition, there were discussions to strengthen the BJP’s political position in four key border states: West Bengal, Punjab, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. After recent success in West Bengal, the party is now expected to focus more heavily on Punjab, with Mr Shah likely to play a central role in shaping future strategy.

Sources said the meeting was part of a wider exercise ahead of the BJP president’s new national team announcement and a possible change in the Union government.

The talks are also seen as preparation for finalizing organizational and government changes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his foreign visit on June 18.
