BJP supporters and activists staged a protest in the town on December 24 criticizing the state government over the Karnataka Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (prevention) Bill, 2025.
The activists were led by TS Srivatsa, Krishnaraja MLA, who called the proposed legislation a draconian act to curtail freedom of speech and suppress opposition.
Activists raised slogans against the government, saying the bill was not only unconstitutional but an attempt to silence the voices of those critical of the government.
BJP leaders tore up copies of the law and carried placards with slogans on a black background to signal that it was a black law that would take away people’s freedom of speech. BJP activists said that the agitation will intensify in the coming days and will be held across the state. They further expressed concern that if it becomes law, it could be used by Congress as a tool for political revenge.
