The BJP on Saturday (Nov 22, 2025) said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is objecting to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and is engaging in appeasement politics as she senses imminent defeat of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in next year’s assembly elections.
BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said Banerjee is “terrified” of the ongoing Special Intensive Review (SIR) as it will expose “infiltrators” whom the ruling TMC has “brought up” as its vote bank in the state.
“When there were reports on various TV channels that infiltrators were returning to their country… Mamata Banerjee looked sad, worried and deeply upset,” Mr Bhata told reporters at the BJP headquarters here.
“Mamata Banerjee now thinks that she has nurtured these infiltrators, got them fake certificates so that when the time comes, they will vote for her, but now that the elections are coming, they are going back to their country,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ms Banerjee is set to hold a rally in Bongaon, North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal on November 25 before leading a 3km march from Chandpara to Thakurnagar – the spiritual headquarters of the Matua community – as part of her campaign against the SIR electoral rolls.
It is the latest escalation in her campaign against the SIR, which she has condemned as “coercive” and “chaotic”.
“Why is Mamata Banerjee so worried and worried about a SIR who will ensure that only those who are Indian citizens can vote? What compulsion does she have?” Mr. Bhatia jibed.
A BJP spokesperson claimed that Banerjee’s entire political stance is based on “polarization of the community and votes of infiltrators”.
“At the behest of Mamata Banerjee, her party leader Humayun Kabir is talking about building the Babri Masjid on December 6… It is now clear how Mamata Banerjee is pursuing a policy of appeasement by adopting an anti-Hindu stance,” Mr Bhatia said.
“The countdown has begun for the TMC,” he said, claiming that the people of West Bengal would teach Banerjee a “tough lesson” in the state polls next year.
