Officials of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) raided a private workshop in Vijayawada and seized a fake punching machine used to print fake BIS hallmarks.
The team, led by Director and Head of BIS, Vijayawada, Prem Sajani Patnala, raided the workshop at One Town on Monday. They seized the fake machine along with a laptop and gold ornaments which were sold with a fake hallmark at Ammanna Gold Jewellers.
Meanwhile, a gold shop owner was selling jewelery with fake BIS hallmarks in violation of mandatory hallmarking provisions under the BIS Act, 2016, Joint Director T Arjun said.
“Action will be taken against the shopkeeper under Section 29 of the BIS Act, 2016, which provides for imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of not less than ₹1,000. The fine may be up to five times the value of the goods involved in the violation,” said Deputy Director D Vivek Reddy, who was involved in the operation.
Strict action will be taken against those who violate BIS hallmarking rules. The public is requested to use the BIS Care App available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store to verify the certification details, Ms. Prem Sajani said.
