BIS conducts search and seizure in Mysuru jewelery shop

On September 16, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a search and seizure at a jewelery shop in Mysuru’s Lashkar Mohalla and seized about 430 grams of gold ornaments that did not carry the mandatory Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID).

According to an official statement, the operation was conducted at Pratibha Jewels as part of BIS’s enforcement activities against misuse of BIS Standard Mark and violation of hallmarking regulations.

The absence of HUID was a violation of the provisions and regulations of the BIS Act, 2016. Based on the findings, legal proceedings are initiated against the concerned person under the law, the statement said.

BIS said it conducts search and seizure operations based on credible information regarding misuse of the BIS standard mark and violation of hallmark regulations. The aim of these enforcement measures is to protect the interests of consumers, prevent deceptive business practices and limit the circulation of low-quality and counterfeit products, he said.

Consumers have been advised to verify the authenticity of hallmarked gold jewelery through the BIS Care app and report suspicious or substandard products. More information is available on the BIS website.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of Scientist-E and Director P. Jayachandra Babu and involved Scientist-C and Deputy Director Manish Raj, Scientist-B and Deputy Director Piyush Kumar Gupta and other BIS personnel.
