Jan Suraaj’s party opened its account in the Bihar Legislative Council elections with its candidate Suresh Prasad Rai defeating Congress MLC Madan Mohan Jha by 324 votes in the Darbhanga teachers seat, officials said on Wednesday (Oct 28, 2026).
BJP candidate Narendra Prasad Singh on Tuesday (October 27) defeated his nearest rival, independent candidate Bhushan Kumar Jha, to win the Tirhut Teachers constituency. Party nominee NK Yadav was also declared winner from Kosi Graduates seat.
In the Patna Graduates constituency, JD(U)’s Neeraj Kumar defeated the RJD candidate, though the official results for the seat are yet to be declared.
BJP’s sitting MLC from Patna teachers seat, Nawal Kishor Yadav, lost to RJD’s Sanjiv Kumar, sources said.
In Saran Teachers constituency, incumbent MLC Afaq Ahmed was defeated by independent candidate Rahul Raj, they said.
Election officials said results for the remaining seats should be announced by Wednesday (October 28) evening.
The MLC polls will decide the electoral fate of 90 candidates in four graduate posts and 60 candidates in four teaching constituencies.
Voting held on October 23 saw a turnout of 82.85% in teacher constituencies and 53.42% in graduate seats.
Patna, Darbhanga, Tirhut and Kosi graduate constituencies had a total of 4.92 lakh eligible voters, while Patna, Darbhanga, Tirhut and Saran teacher seats had 40,253 voters.
Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary congratulated the winning candidates in the teaching constituencies and expressed confidence that they will work towards improving the quality of education.
Speaking to reporters after his victory, JD(U)’s Neeraj Kumar took a swipe at party leader Anant Singh.
“Where are you Gunjan? Come and get some sweets,” Kumar quipped in an apparent reference to a viral video that purportedly showed Anant Singh speaking to Gunjan Singh for his help and telling him to distribute sweets even before the election results were announced.
Don-turned-politician Anant Singh virtually rebelled against the JD(U) and campaigned for Jana Party candidate Suraaj Anuj Singh. Singh was subsequently suspended by the JD(U) for alleged anti-party activities.
Reacting to the poll results, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav told reporters, “After almost two-and-a-half decades, our party has won this election.”
“The NDA conspiracy to add fake votes was also exposed in the MLC polls. The EC should maintain transparency in the election process. The RJD came second in several seats. BJP’s Nawal Kishore Yadav had fake votes, yet Sanjiv secured victory (in the Patna teachers seat),” Mr Yadav claimed.
The Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly also alleged that there was a serious crisis of jobs and investment in Bihar.
JD(U) state president Umesh Kushwaha said Neeraj Kumar’s victory was “undoubtedly a historic victory for the NDA”.
