The Election Commission on Saturday ordered the transfer of Patna Senior Superintendent of Police (Rural) following the outbreak of violence in Mokama following the killing of party supporter Jan Suraaj.
Tensions are rising in Mokama ahead of the assembly elections after Jan Suraaj’s supporter Dularchand Yadav was murdered during the election campaign.
On Friday, Yadav’s supporters allegedly pelted stones at the vehicle of Mokamy’s Rashtriya Janata Dal candidate, Veena Devi.
“The Commission has further directed that Vikram Sihag, Superintendent of Police (Rural), Patna may also be transferred. Therefore, a group of officers may be dispatched expeditiously to depute him in his place,” the election body told the Chief Electoral Officer.
The electoral commission first requested a detailed report from the state on Friday.
Meanwhile, two Station House Officers (SHOs) have been suspended in connection with the case, officials confirmed on Saturday.
According to Rural Superintendent of Police (SP), Patna, Ghoswari SHO Madhusudan Kumar and Bhadaur SHO Ravi Ranjan have been suspended after a preliminary investigation into the incident.
Political outrage after violence in Mokama
The incident sparked political outrage across the state, with several leaders condemning the violence ahead of the elections.
Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the Mokama murder incident, saying if such a crime can take place despite heavy security deployment, it raises the question whether the state is under “jungle raj” or “mangal raj”.
The SP chief questioned the law and order situation and asked how such crimes could happen in areas where top officials, including the prime minister and home minister, were campaigning. Speaking to ANI in Darbhanga, Akhilesh said, “A place where the Prime Minister and the Home Minister are campaigning, where VIPs with Z security are present – if there is a murder in such a place, then it will show whether it is a ‘jungle raj’ or a ‘mangal raj’.”
The NDA partners in Bihar unveiled their election manifesto Sankalp Patra in Patna on Friday ahead of the crucial assembly polls.
The manifesto promises more than a million government jobs and employment opportunities, a nationwide skill census to facilitate skill-based employment and the establishment of mega skill centers in every district to make Bihar a “global skill hub”.
If a murder takes place in such a place, then it shows whether it is a ‘jungle raj’ or a ‘mangal raj’.
