More than 1,000 international students in the US have had visa or legal status abolished in recent weeks, provoked legal battles and increased fears of mass deportation. According to the revision of court records and statements at the University and Associated Press Associated Press, at least 1,024 students from 160 universities and universities have been affected since the end of March.
Students submitted litigation against the Ministry of Internal Security (DHS), claiming that they were denied a proper process and had permission to remain suddenly canceled in the US. Disabled institutions include elite private universities such as Harvard and Stanford, large public schools such as the University of Maryland and Ohio State University, and smaller universities of free art.
Reasons for ending visas unclear
While student visas can be canceled for various reasons, universities say that the recent ending appears to be any. In some cases, they launched the abolition of minor offenses, such as the disturbance of the old traffic. Some students claim that they have never been informed of a specific reason they were focused on.
“The timing and uniformity of these endings leaves only a small question that DHS has adopted nationwide policy, whether written or not, a mass termination of the student status (legal),” said Acla lawyers Michigan, representing students at Wayne State University and the University of Michigan.
Challenges across states
In the high-ranking case, the student of Columbia University Mahmúd Khalil was detained in the middle of the accusation of engaging in pro-Palestinian activism. However, most universities claim that students affected by the recent wave of visa ends have no links to political protests.
“Greater check on all immigrants”
Experts say this step is part of a wider trend under Trump administration to increase pressure on all categories of immigrants.
“What you see with foreign students is indeed a piece of the much greater control brings Trump’s administration brings immigrants of all different categories,” said Michelle Mittelstadt, director of public affairs at the Institute of Migration Policy.
How does a student visa work the system
International students usually enter the US on the F-1 visa after ensuring acceptance and interviewing at the American Consulate or Embassy. They must prove that they can financially support their education and maintain a good academic position.
While the Foreign Ministry issues entry visas as soon as students are in the US, their legal status is managed by Student and Exchange Visitor (SEVP) within DHS.
Recently university officials claim that they have discovered after the Homeland Security online database, rather than through standard notification channels.
From the classroom to the threat of deportation
Previously, the loss of the entry visa did not affect the student’s legal stay in the US-Propřeza could not leave and re-enter. Now, however, the termination of legal status means that students face the risk of arrest by immigration bodies. Some have already fled the ground to avoid potential detention.
“The public measures that take Ice and the Ministry of Internal Security around some of these students, where they remove these students from their homes or their streets, usually do not do this if there is no student visa,” said Sarah Spreitzer, vice president of government relations in the US Education Council. “The threat of this very quick removal is something new.”

Higher schools push back, try to calm the fears
Higher school administrators require clarity and offer support for affected students. They urge students to carry their documents and avoid international travel.
“These are unprecedented times and our normal main principles for life in democratic society are questioned,” wrote Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Boston Marcelo Suárez-Oozco in the whole campus report. He said that the legal status of two students and five others in the educational programs was canceled.
Universities across the country reflect its concern – they do not care about federal recovery samples, but try to reassure anxiety students.
