Amid ongoing farmers’ protest, the state government on Wednesday issued a final notification for the acquisition of 4,944.49 acres of land spread over four villages near Bidadi for the Greater Bengaluru Integrated Township (GBIT) project, popularly known as the Bidadi Township project. This is the largest tranche of land announced so far. The first set covered only 518.45 acres in three villages.

The development came hours after Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced that the state government would set up a committee to look into the merits and demerits of the project. Meanwhile, farmers’ protest at Bairamangale in Bidadi against the project is nearing 500 days.

The latest notification on Wednesday covers four revenue villages, including KG Gollarapalya, Bannigiri, Aralalusandra and Hosuru, covering 4,944.49 acres, including 4,717.96 acres of agricultural land. Among them, Hosuru accounts for 2,390.12 acres while Aralalusandra covers 1,460.21 acres. This is the second of three groups of villages announced for the project.

With this, the government issued final notifications for the acquisition of 5,462 acres of land spread across seven villages. However, the project requires acquisition of 9,600 acres spread over nine revenue villages and 16 non-revenue villages. The two remaining villages where the final notification is awaited are Bairamangala and Kanchugaranahalli.

Working on a sequel

A senior GBDA official claimed that the consent of the required percentage of stakeholders had been obtained and that the work would continue even as an appraisal of the project was carried out.

“Many farmers are coming to our office demanding faster notification of their land and release of compensation. So we have to continue working for them,” the official said. “Those who do not want to part with their land, we will not force them. Whoever is willing to give their land, we will release compensation and continue our work,” he added.
