Beyond the coast exploring the fascinating world of fish in Chennai

Chennai is home to a remarkable diversity of fish, including several native species that inhabit its ponds, lakes, canals and other water bodies. In this video, Dennis S. Jesudasan talks to native fish enthusiast Beta Mahatvaraj, who documents native freshwater fish species in southern India. He introduces us to some of the fascinating species found in and around Chennai, including mudfish – fish that can survive outside of water – and fish that can even ‘walk’. However, these unique species are facing increasing threats as Chennai’s water bodies become increasingly polluted. Mahatvaraj explains the impact of pollution on native fish and why protecting these habitats is critical to preserving Chennai’s aquatic biodiversity.
