The Beta Vembanad Forum presented nine projects aimed at ecological restoration of the Vembanad Lake, the largest wetland in the state. The projects were presented by experts at the Beta Vembanad forum organized by the Alappuzha district administration on Saturday. Proposed initiatives include the development of value-added products from water hyacinth, implementation of on-site sanitation systems, water quality monitoring among students and citizens through school laboratories, fisheries enhancement using nursery pen technology, bio-jacket construction, sluice gate technology, natural filters to remove pesticides, and a centralized cleaning and sanitation infrastructure project to reduce the use of plastics in the houseboat sector.
The seminar, attended by national and international experts, was organized to present the potential and opportunities of the Vembanad restoration initiative – implemented under the auspices of the district administration for the last one and a half years – to national and international experts and financial institutions and to mobilize Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds for the rejuvenation of the lake.
The forum was launched online by Archana Varma, Additional Secretary, Jal Shakti Union Ministry and Director, National Water Mission. District Collector Alex Varghese delivered the opening remarks. Rohith Joseph, Director, TAGS Forum, explained the details of the project.
Organizers said the forum proved to be a crucial step in mobilizing the funds required for the comprehensive restoration of the Vembanad wetland and that the next phase of activities would be planned and implemented soon.
