With only four days left for the completion of the Gruha Jyothi survey, Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom) officials said they would write to the power department seeking an extension of one month. As of August 27, Escoms across Karnataka have verified 68.90% households. Bescom has so far completed the verification of nearly 65.93% households.
A senior Bescom official said, “The August 31 deadline has been set so that the survey can be completed smoothly and at a good pace. With about 34% households yet to be covered, we are confident of completing the exercise within a month.”
When asked about the reasons for the delay in completing the survey, he said, “Our meters were under the supervision of the assistant technicians in their respective jurisdictions. While some houses were locked, others were delayed in producing the necessary documents. However, we have asked the meters to visit the locked houses three times so that the beneficiaries are not left out.”
However, residents across the city also complained of issues such as a slow server when meters arrived at their doorstep for the survey. Shobha, a resident of JC Nagar Main Road, said, “Whenever the meter readers came in the morning, the server was slow and they couldn’t enter my details into the mobile app. They later came at 7.30 pm to complete the verification. The details of most of the households in our locality were entered late in the evening when the app worked faster.”
Option to change name
Bescom on Thursday launched a fully digital renaming facility to connect electricity across urban areas in its jurisdiction spanning eight districts. The initiative aims to make Bescom the first distribution company in India to fully digitize the ownership transfer process.
Launching the platform, Energy and Tourism Minister KJ George said the initiative uses information technology to provide transparent and quality services directly to consumers, eliminating the need to visit branches under the division. He noted that the service covers consumers with GBA e-Khata mutations as well as property owners with or without non-GBA e-PIDs.
Mr. George also announced plans to extend the paperless facility to rural areas in all eight Bescom districts and to other Escoms in the state in the coming days.
According to details provided by the department, the process has been implemented on a pilot basis and has already processed over 31,000 digital name changes, averaging over 2,000 online transfers per week.
Consumers can submit applications, upload details, e-stamp and complete e-signature directly through the Bescom Web Self-Service (WSS) portal. They are required to pay a processing fee of ₹100 and ₹1,194 for e-stamp charges and e-sign through the portal. No physical cash payments will be accepted.
Consumers can also download e-signed documents and Official Confirmation Memorandum (OM) without visiting Bescom offices.
