The Outer Ring Road (ORR) is a developing area that continues to face road and storm water runoff issues, but these issues are now in the final stages of being resolved, said M. Maheshwar Rao, Chief Commissioner, Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA).
“My predecessor, Tushar Giri Nath sir, has already taken necessary measures to solve the problems in this area. All these works are on the verge of completion,” Mr. Rao said, adding that citizens should cooperate till the works are completed.
Mr. Rao made these remarks in the context of a letter sent by the Individual Tax Payers Forum (ITPF) of Varthur, Panathur and Balagere, a civic group representing income tax payers, to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The letter accused the civic agencies of carrying out “unscientific, incomplete and poorly co-ordinated” white-lining and drainage works that have led to major flooding and disruption of traffic and daily life.
Mr. Rao said he had not yet received any information about such complaints, but added that citizens were welcome to raise their concerns, which would be thoroughly investigated.
“Potholes are bound to occur during heavy rains, but we are taking quick steps to fix them. During monsoon, there may be problems even if quality work is done,” Mr. Rao said.
In a meeting with all chief engineers, Mr. Rao directed them to prioritize pothole repairs along the ORR. He instructed that similar measures be taken on major, sub-arterial and district roads to ensure safe and smooth commuting.
He also ordered that the ongoing white paint work be kept in good condition to facilitate smooth movement of vehicles and that the contractors responsible for these projects ensure regular maintenance.
“Drainage pipes installed along the flyovers to drain rainwater have deteriorated at several places, resulting in water falling directly on the roads and causing damage,” Mr. Rao told the engineers. He instructed them to immediately inspect and replace the damaged pipes.
