Bengaluru’s ‘Fat Dog Election’: 64 Canine Candidates, Two Finalists and an Internet-Powered Showdown | Today’s news
Bengaluru’s newest online competition has little to do with tech start-ups, cricket or electoral politics. Instead, it’s massive canines, enthusiastic fans and a city-wide competition to crown their unofficial fat dog champion.
Fat Dogs of BLR, a community-driven tournament inspired by Delhi’s viral Fat Dogs of Delhi competition, has reached its final stage after starting with 64 contestants. Only two dogs remain in the running, with supporters rallying behind their favorites in a contest that has turned a frivolous internet trend into a shared community experience.
Announcing the development on October 16, organizers said the tournament had gone through elimination rounds, with each stage bringing the contestants closer to the final showdown.
The premise is simple: celebrate the dogs that have caught people’s attention and let the public decide which one deserves the city’s bragging rights. The result is a format familiar to fans of reality television and sports tournaments, except that the contestants have four paws and their supporters campaign for the canine favorites.
From a viral trend in Delhi to a dog competition in Bengaluru
The Bengaluru contest follows the popularity of Fat Dogs of Delhi, which brought neighborhood dogs into the online spotlight. Fat Dogs of BLR takes a similar idea to another city, inviting residents to participate in a contest built on local affection for dogs and the appeal of Internet-driven community events.
With the 64 contestants whittled down to two finalists, the competition created a series of matches for fans to watch. Organizers describe it as a way to bring people together over an unexpected common interest.
The competition also reflects how online communities can form around niche interests, with voting and friendly rivalry giving participants a reason to engage beyond simply viewing or sharing content.
Fave, Emergent and CARE teamed up for the initiative
The initiative brings together Fave, a UPI app for Gen Z built on shared money; Emergent, an AI-powered software development platform used to build competitor websites; and Charlie’s Animal Rescue Center (CARE), which will receive the funds raised through this initiative.
Emergent’s platform allows visitors to watch the tournament and watch matches, while Fave is one of the partners behind the community-led campaign. CARE’s involvement gives the initiative an animal welfare component, with the rescue center poised to receive the funds raised.
The partnership brings together digital payments, artificial intelligence software development and animal welfare in a campaign designed to encourage public participation.
Which dog will win the unofficial title of Bengaluru?
With two finalists remaining, the Fat Dogs of BLR are closing in on the final verdict. The contest’s appeal lies in the combination of local pride, friendly competition and the Internet’s ability to turn an everyday topic into a shared cultural moment.
For Bengaluru dog enthusiasts, the question now is which contender will emerge as the city favourite. For everyone else, the tournament offers yet another example of how community online trends can move beyond social media posts and become participatory events.
