At least 12 makeshift shelters at Parappana Agrahara in southeast Bengaluru, occupied by daily wage labourers, were damaged in an accidental fire on Friday morning, police said. No casualties were reported.
There were about 55 shelters in the settlement, 12 of which were completely gutted, police said.
The incident happened around four in the morning when the residents were sleeping. The flames were first noticed outside the sheds, prompting residents to rush outside. At first they tried to put out the fire themselves, but it quickly spread to other sheds. They later alerted the police and fire department.
Four fire trucks intervened in the situation, the flames were brought under control after a three-hour intervention.
“The workers lit a campfire to ward off the cold at night, but did not extinguish the fire before going to bed. In the early hours, the flames spread due to strong winds and eventually swept across the settlement,” the officer said.
