Bengaluru: Three arrested in quarry collapse case that killed seven
At least seven workers were killed and five others injured after a massive boulder fell on some vehicles, including a tractor-trailer that was loading crushed stones, at a quarry in Madapattana village on the outskirts of Bengaluru on Thursday.
The Bengaluru South district police on Thursday arrested three people, including a quarry owner, in connection with a boulder fall at a quarry that killed seven people at Madapattana village in Tavarekere Hobli on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
The arrested accused have been identified as Panduranga, owner of Sai Ram Quarry, N. Lokesh, manager of the quarry, and Raju, manager of Krishna Stone Crushers. Police said more arrests are likely in the case.
The arrest came after a case was registered under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which dealt with manslaughter not amounting to murder. A senior police officer told The Hindu that the arrest was based on preliminary investigation and inadequate security measures at the quarry.
“We have sought an interim report from the Ministry of Mines and Geology to understand what could have caused the incident. The ministry can investigate the technical aspects and submit a report based on which we will take further action,” the officer said.
He further stated that a detailed investigation would be conducted based on the findings of the Department of Mining and Geology.
During the preliminary investigation, the police found no evidence of a blast at the time of the accident. They suspect the collapse was caused by the instability of a massive rock that slid down about 40 feet, although the exact cause of the slide has yet to be determined.
