The driver of a Rapido flatbed has been arrested on charges of molesting a female passenger, Bengaluru police said on Sunday.
The alleged incident, which took place on November 6, became public knowledge after the woman posted details on social media.
The social media monitoring unit of the Bengaluru police noticed the post and subsequently got in touch with her to get more details. A case was officially registered the next day and an investigation was launched, police said.
The incident occurred when the woman was returning to the Paying Guest (PG) hostel from near Church Street.
The accused has been identified as 28-year-old Lokesh, a resident of Muniyappa Layout, Ullal, Bengaluru.
“…the captain tried to grab my legs while I was driving. It happened so suddenly that I couldn’t even process it, let alone record it,” the woman wrote in her post on the social network.
“When he did it again, I told him, ‘Bhaiya, kya kar rahe ho, mat karo,’ but he didn’t stop,” she added.
The woman said she was in tears when she arrived at her destination. She added that a bystander noticed her agitation, stepped in and challenged the driver.
“I’m sharing this because no woman should have to go through something like this – not in a taxi, not on a bike, not anywhere. It’s not the first time something like this has happened to me. But today I just couldn’t stay silent because I felt unsafe,” the woman said.
UP news: Girl claims she raped madrassa maulana, medical report refutes allegation
In a separate incident, family members of a teenage girl from Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur district alleged that she was raped by a maulan of an illegal madrassa where she was studying, an allegation found to be false during a medical examination, police said on Sunday.
In her complaint filed on November 4, the 15-year-old girl’s mother alleged that Maulana Irfan Ul Qadri of Rizviya Gulshan Fatima madrasa in the old city locality of Kotwali area had raped her daughter, police said.
Based on the complaint, an FIR has been registered against Qadri, who is absconding, Tripathi said, adding that the police have detained his wife.
However, the girl’s medical examination at the district hospital on Saturday did not confirm the rape. When questioned the next day, the girl recanted her statement, police said.
Although the rape has not been confirmed, a detailed investigation is underway into the matter, said Additional Superintendent of Police North Alok Singh.
It is also investigating why the girl and her family accused Qadri of rape, he said.
