Bengaluru: Redesigned ORR to include dedicated bus and cycle lanes; the space under the flyovers to be converted

The upgraded Outer Ring Road (ORR) stretch between Silk Board Junction and KR Puram will have dedicated bus and cycle lanes in addition to the elevated Namma Metro corridor and will creatively use the space under flyovers to create community spaces, according to a presentation by Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. (B-SMILE) accessed by The Hindu.

As part of the project, six intersections will be built along the stretch and the space under the flyovers at these intersections will be transformed into community spaces with seating lounges, markets, retail areas, game courts and a concert center. The concert center will offer shaded seating, charging lockers, Wi-Fi and water stations, dedicated micromobile docks with solar charging, and an organized auto-rickshaw rest area with a digital queuing system and a shaded waiting area.

Bike and bus lanes

While there will be a designated cycle lane on the trail, there will be a red stripe on the road marking the bus lane; neither will be physically separated by presentation. Civic activist Sandeep Aniruddhan pointed out that bus lanes are only effective if they are placed in the middle of the road next to the median and are physically separated.

Better integration

In the B-SMILE presentation, he said that the road will be designed as a mobility corridor with seamless integration of all modes of transport. It aims to provide safe and easy entry/exit to technology parks, well-integrated junctions, metro stations and bus stations along with better storm water disposal to avoid traffic snarls on the key corridor.

According to B-SMILE, there are at least 6.42 Lakh employees using 3.38 Lakh vehicles on this stretch of ORR every day.
