Bengaluru will require 1,074.05 km of additional road network in the next four years, the Fifth State Finance Commission said in its report. The commission recommended the government to allocate funds to the new city corporations to meet this requirement by starting construction of at least 250 km of roads every year.
The recommendation follows the proposals of requirements submitted by the city corporations, aimed at solving congestion in the city. Bengaluru currently has a road network of nearly 13,000 km, which has been stagnant for over a decade. Meanwhile, the number of vehicles has doubled over the past decade to nearly 1.3 million. About 1,500 new vehicles will be added to the city every day.
