Bengaluru hosts first Plastic Free Action Walk and Run

More than 1,000 people took part in the first plastic-free Bengaluru Climate Action Walk & Run 2026 on Sunday, with organizers demonstrating how large public events can be held without single-use plastics while promoting climate action and sustainable living.

Organized on the occasion of World Environment Day in line with the UN Environment Programme’s global campaign, the event was jointly organized by Hasirotsava Forum, Suraksha Enviro Solutions and Karnataka Jesuit Province Environment Commission.

Vijayalakshmi, Chief Environment Officer, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, told the participants that addressing climate change requires active public participation along with government initiatives.

She called for reducing plastic consumption, adopting scientific waste management practices and adopting an environmentally responsible lifestyle.

Refreshments were served in reusable steel utensils, drinking water was provided in biodegradable cups, and no t-shirts were distributed to avoid clothing waste. Instead, each participant received a tree. Race bibs, wristbands and hydration cups were made from seed paper that can be planted after use.

The event was attended by participants, including school and college students, environmental enthusiasts, professional runners and senior citizens. One of the highlights was the participation of people across all age groups, from a four-year-old child to a 95-year-old senior citizen.
