The Karnataka government will soon extend Gruha Arogya to the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) areas, a major step towards strengthening public health delivery in the cities.
Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao and Principal Secretary (Health) Harsh Gupta discussed the expansion in a meeting with Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Wednesday. Discussions focused on strategies for adapting and scaling up a successful rural health care initiative to an urban setting.
Gruha Arogya has seen significant success in rural Karnataka, with dedicated health workers reaching more than 35 thousand families and screening more than one million people for 14 major NCDs. The program has emerged as a model for preventive health care under the door, with officials citing an encouraging public response and measurable improvements in early detection.
With the proposed rollout of Gruha Arogya 2.0 in the GBA regions, the Ministry of Health aims to replicate the rural model in urban areas, ensuring systematic household outreach, timely screening and continuity of care. The initiative seeks to shift the focus of public health from reactive treatment to proactive prevention, Mr. Rao said.
