Bengaluru employee says manager barred Dussehra from leaving days after putting him on PIP, Internet says ‘New layoff strategy’ | Today’s news
A Bengaluru-based employee sparked a debate on Reddit after he alleged that his manager put him on a performance improvement plan (PIP) days before a scheduled Dussehra trip to his hometown and subsequently denied his leave request.
The employee said he works in a retail-focused company in Bengaluru and joined the organization about four months ago. He clarified in the comments section that it is fresher.
According to his post on Reddit, he booked flights to travel home for Dussehra and spend time with his family. However, his plans were disrupted after a performance review meeting in which his manager reportedly raised concerns about his output and placed him on a PIP.
‘Today my manager put me under PIP’
The employee said his manager informed him that his performance during the review did not meet expectations.
“We had my performance review today and he put me under PIP for not delivering the expected output or performance,” the employee wrote.

He said he subsequently requested two days off to celebrate the festival with his family, but his manager denied the request because he was on PIP.
“Later I asked him if I have 2 days leave to spend time with my family occasionally. But he refused saying I am under PIP and can’t give any leave,” the post read.
The employee also claimed that he had not received written communication confirming the PIP and claimed that his leave requests had previously been refused.
“But they haven’t given me any written confirmation of my PIP. What should I do now? I’m really confused and stressed,” he wrote.
The employee says the Dussehra trip was planned in advance
The employee said that the previous week he had booked travel tickets for approx ₹5,000 and was looking forward to visiting his hometown after a long gap.
“I really want to go home and spend time with my family because it’s been a long time since I went home and my parents are excited and waiting for my arrival,” he added.
The post sparked a discussion among Reddit users about workplace pressure, performance reviews and the consequences of being placed on a PIP shortly before a planned vacation.

Reddit users are debating whether PIP signals a possible exit
Several users have noted that this is a new layoff strategy.
“It’s just my opinion in your place I’d go home. Looks like they’re aiming to remove you,” wrote one user.
Another commenter described PIP as “the new layoff strategy” and added: “Go home, enjoy the festival and start looking for another job.”
Other users advised the employee to consider alternative job opportunities while assessing whether he could meet the expectations set forth in the performance review process.
One commenter argued that PIPs can include challenging goals and may not always result in employee retention.
“It’s the norm to give people a PIP, drop unreasonable expectations, tell them they’ll be retained if they perform well, and then let them go,” the commenter wrote.
Another Reddit user advised the employee to focus on future opportunities if he thinks he will have trouble clearing the PIP.
“In a very rare scenario, PIP will turn out positive. If somewhere you believe you can’t make it, start looking for a job after the holidays,” the comment read.
