With the Supreme Court issuing a final order to relocate stray dogs from institutions and public spaces like bus shelters, Bengaluru corporations are pushing to speed up infrastructure work to start the relocation process.
A survey conducted by the city corporations revealed that about 2,696 dogs need to be relocated. Several corporations are also planning one more survey to complete the total.
According to documents reviewed by The Hindu, South and North City Corporations have made significant progress in infrastructure works, while others are lagging even in construction activities.
South Corporation has already constructed a shelter with a capacity of 100 dogs at S. Bingipura. The corporation has also selected an NGO to oversee the care of stray dogs at the shelter home.
A shelter with a capacity of 500 dogs is being set up at Medi Agrahara in North Corporation. Construction work is in the final stages and the shelter will be ready by May 30, according to the document.
Western and Eastern Corporations have identified land at Sumanahalli and Basavanapura and the ground work is in the initial stage. The companies plan to set up shelters, each with a capacity of 500 dogs. While the West Corporation expects completion within three months, the East Corporation is optimistic about completing the work within two months. The Central Corporation is also setting up a shelter with a capacity of 500 dogs at Bingipura where foundation work is going on.
According to a Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) source, the resettlement will be done in phases and the care of the dogs will be entrusted to NGOs. The company will allocate ₹3,000 per dog per month, including feeding costs. Nodal officers, most of whom are corporate vets, will oversee the operations.
