
In its monthly forecast, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted the onset of the Southwest Monsoon over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 14-16, stressing that the average rainfall across the country during May is most likely to be above normal.
“Monsoon may arrive over Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 14-16,” Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology, IMD, told PTI.
In May, the weather agency said rainfall is most likely to be above normal over India, except for some parts of east, northeast and east central India.
The IMD noted that in April, India was affected by seven western disturbances that resulted in normal to sub-normal maximum temperatures in most parts of the country, except southern peninsular India.

IMD rain forecast
- Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Rajasthan light to moderate precipitation with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h is likely until May 7.
- Uttar Pradesh: Rain and thunderstorms will intensify between May 4 and May 7.
- Hail warning Jammu and Kashmir (May 3), Himachal Pradesh (May 3-4) a Uttarakhand (May 4-5)
- Isolated very heavy precipitation is expected Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalayaand Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura region until May 3.
- Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh: Isolated showers and lightning are expected in the next five days.
- Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala: We are likely to see heavy showers till May 4.
- Karnataka: Lightning and gusty winds are expected over south and north interior Karnataka during the first two days of the month.
Above normal heat days probably in May
Some parts of the Himalayan foothills, east coast states, Gujarat and Maharashtra are likely to see above-normal heat days in May, the IMD said.
“During May 2026, minimum temperatures are expected to be above normal in many parts of the country,” said Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
However, he said, “many areas of northwest India along with some parts of central India and adjoining areas of peninsular India and southern parts of northeast India are likely to experience normal to below normal minimum temperatures”.

On May 2, a fairly typical summer day can be expected in Delhi, with partly clear skies and temperatures staying within the seasonal average. The highest daytime temperatures will reach 38 to 40 °C, night temperatures will drop to 24 to 26 °C. Both are considered “normal” for this time of year.
Tomorrow, May 3, the weather will be more active, as the sky will become significantly cloudy in the afternoon. This shift is expected to bring light rain, thunderstorms and lightning in the afternoon and evening.
On Sunday, thanks to the rain during the day, it will be slightly cooler than usual (max 36 °C to 38 °C). The night will be slightly warmer than usual (lowest temperatures 25°C to 27°C).
Today’s weather in Bengaluru
According to Regional Met Center Bengaluru, Bengaluru (Rural) and Bengaluru (Urban) are likely to experience light to moderate rain/thunderstorms with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over the weekend.
Shivamogga, Davanagere, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Mysuru, Tumakuru, Mandya, Ramanagara, Kolar and Chamarajanagara districts of south Karnataka are also expected to receive rain.
These rains are expected to continue in isolated areas until May 7.
Weather in Mumbai today
According to the Regional Met Center Mumbai, the city expects partly clear skies in the morning, with mostly clear skies in the afternoon/evening.
The maximum and minimum temperatures were forecast to be around 33 degrees. C and 27°C.
