Bengaluru 2BHK at ₹70,000 rent, ₹4,000,000 deposit sparks debate: ‘My flat in France is cheaper’ | Today’s news

A Reddit user’s account was almost quoted ₹70,000 per month for a 2BHK flat in Bengaluru along with a deposit of approx. ₹3-4 lakh, has sparked an online debate about rental rates, negotiations with tenants and what constitutes value for money in the city.

The tenant shared the experience in a Reddit post titled “Bangalore’s rental market is getting ridiculous” and said the apartment-hunting experience left him “really frustrated”.

A Bengaluru tenant was cited ₹70,000 rent for 2BHK

According to the Reddit user, the apartment was within walking distance of his office, which made him willing to pay a premium for the property.

“The apartment had a nicely furnished living room and balconies with good views,” he wrote.

However, he said both bedrooms were too small to fit both a double bed and a desk.

The apartment was also advertised as “fully furnished”. But the property only had one bed, two sofas and a small TV, according to the tenant.

“No fridge. No washing machine. No dining table. No bed in second room. I’ve seen better furnished PGs,” he wrote.

The tenant said the landlord was asking rudely ₹70,000 per month including maintenance, while the deposit was around ₹3-4 thousand.

He claimed the landlord wanted an annual rent increase of around 7-8% and told him other landlords in the area were asking for increases of up to 10%.

The tenant offered ₹65,000 with three months advance

A Reddit user said he eventually offered ₹65,000 per month with three months’ advance, but the offer was rejected.

“At this point, where do people think the money is coming from? If I’m paying.” ₹70k for 2BHK, I don’t expect a palace. But I expect premium value – big rooms, right amenities, great amenities,” the user wrote.

In the end, he decided not to take the apartment.

“I left with no regrets,” he wrote.

A Reddit user takes issue with rising rental costs

The tenant also questioned whether tenants are too willing to accept high rents in Bengaluru.

“What bothers me more is how carelessly tenants are willing to throw that kind of money around. IT salaries aren’t the endless source of money they used to be. Jobs aren’t as predictable as they used to be, expenses keep rising and there’s no guarantee your income will increase every year. That ₹“The extra 10-15k you’re paying every month by the way is money that could have gone into investments, savings or simply buying more financial security,” the user wrote.

The Redditor urged potential renters to assess the property beyond its prime rent.

“So please ask about the rent. Measure the rooms. Check the furniture. Ask about maintenance, deductions and future increases. Compare similar apartments. Negotiate. Don’t just accept ‘This is Bangalore’.” If you pay premium, claim premium value. Maybe someone else will be happy to pay for it ₹70k for this apartment. Good for them. But we should also be comfortable saying to ourselves: This is not worth it ₹70k to me and leave,” he concluded.

What Reddit users said about rentals in Bengaluru

The post drew several reactions from other Reddit users, with some arguing that the high rents persist because tenants are willing to pay the said amounts.

One user wrote: “Problem is someone will pay that much. I don’t know why people in Bangalore don’t bargain. Not to generalize but someone will book that flat and pay 70k.”

Another Reddit user attributed the high rents to demand from people moving to Bengaluru for work. User wrote:

“Real Bangaloreans will never agree to pay the outrageous amount that landlords are quoting. Some may be doing well financially. But high-paying tenants always come here for work.”

Every single person I have come across paying ridiculous rent here is not from Karnataka. Landlords prefer foreigners because they get in without thinking. Everyone wants to make money, but most are just leeches and greedy.”

The third user stated that negotiation was not always possible on the part of the tenant. “Although the tenants want to negotiate, the owners are not interested in any negotiations. So in the end, the tenant has no choice but to pay,” the user wrote.

Another Redditor compared Bengali rent to the cost of living in France, writing:

“My apartment in France is cheaper than that and everyone earns more than 1.5 lakh a month in France.

Another user questioned the original poster’s stance, commenting: “You are part of the problem too if you were willing to pay 65k.”
