More than 450 universities supported by the Government in West Bengal are worried about the erosion of autonomy after the state government ordered them to submit their bank account and a fixed deposit (FD) to obtain financial assistance from the government. The institutions also believe that this step is a financial attack on them.
“The finance department has introduced the Fund information system (FIS) portal from the financial year of 2025-26 and it is obliged to provide bank account data and FD details to obtain any financial assistance from the state government,” said the Ministry of Higher Education.
No official explanation was provided about this step and the directors of these auxiliary universities were refrained. However, some academics express their concerns about this matter and feel that the government could “dig into his resources”.
“The state government reduces funds for education in all sectors. Teacher recruitment has been stopped. Research funds are crunched. Universities are autonomous bodies that have long been increased by resources for their research, advocacy and partner partnerships,” said Ishita Mukhathyay.
She said that several teachers’ associations have expressed their anger against the government step, and said: “This step is just to postpone these resources for no reason for no reason. It is an attack on financial and academic autonomy of state educational institutions.
Meanwhile, associate professor with Kolkata College, who did not want to be identified, said: “The government is already taking half of the total school fees collected for a year. This announcement believes that the Corpus fund and repair in the form of FDS and banks can be taken away, especially for construction such as construction. any financial assistance as before the 12th plan. “
