The West Bengal government will launch a fresh probe into Mamata Banerjee’s “false claims” about leg injuries during the 2021 assembly election campaign, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Saturday (October 3, 2026).

At a press conference at the Nabanna State Secretariat, Mr Adhikari claimed that a medical report from the state-run Bangura Institute of Neuroscience showed no signs of a fracture in Ms Banerjee’s leg after the March 2021 incident.

“Mamata Banerjee faked her leg injury while campaigning in Nandigram in 2021. This is the report of Radio Diagnostics Department of Bangur Institute of Neurosciences dated 11 March 2021. There is no evidence of fracture,” Mr Adhikari said while displaying what he claimed was Ms Banerjee’s medical report.

He said the state CID was already investigating the matter and the state government would start a fresh investigation after the Assembly by-elections.

“Her false accusation has insulted the people of Nandigram. The CID is investigating the matter and I will not divulge further details. Once the model code of conduct is lifted after October 9, we will open a fresh investigation into this false propaganda. I am saying this today in support of my claims yesterday,” he said.

The by-elections will be held in Nandigram and Rejinagar seats on October 6 and the results will be declared on October 9.

The CM alleged that the incident was used to deceive the people of the state.

“There was a media trial and the people of West Bengal were misled,” he said.

Mr Adhikari on Friday (October 2) alleged that Ms Banerjee allegedly faked a leg injury in 2021 when she addressed a rally in Nandigram’s Birulia Bazaar, incidentally the same place where the then CM suffered an injury five years ago.

Ms. Banerjee sustained injuries to her left leg and waist in Reyapara area of Birulia on 10 March 2021 during her election campaign.

She initially stated that several unknown persons deliberately pushed her against the open door of the car, causing them to violently strike her left leg and crush it in the midst of a thick crowd.

In a subsequent video message from the hospital, she described a huge crowd crowding into her car as she greeted supporters, causing her leg to be crushed and injured.

She was officially diagnosed with severe bone and ligament injuries to her left ankle and foot, along with bruising and pain in her right shoulder, forearm, neck and waist, and was rushed back to Kolkata and admitted to SSKM State Hospital.

After extensive tests, Ms Banerjee was released on March 12 with her left leg in a cast and continued her subsequent campaign in a wheelchair.

The Trinamool Congress registered a landslide victory in the 2021 polls, with the party winning 216 of the 294 seats and narrowing the BJP to 77.
