Bengal BJP MLA Debra alleges assault by own party workers

West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Debra constituency, Subhashis Om, claims he was assaulted by his own party workers on Monday evening (November 2, 2026). He was attacked for allegedly resisting extortion and was hospitalized after sustaining multiple injuries during the scuffle.

The lawmaker named at least six people in his handwritten police complaint filed at Debra local police station in Paschim Midnapore district.

The MLA was initially admitted to a local hospital in Debra after sustaining injuries to his limbs and head. He was later shifted to Medinipur District Hospital for better treatment.

“Our government has zero tolerance for extortion; I respected that stance, I tried to move forward, but I realized that extortion had not stopped and with the help of the district leadership, extortion was going on,” Mr Om told reporters from the hospital as he underwent treatment.

He added that the people who attacked him were BJP workers and that some of them had “joined the party” after May 4, once the party came to power in the state. Mr. Om said that when he protested against the extortion issues, he was attacked. He also said that four to five people who were with him were also attacked.

Tanmoy Das, district BJP president, said he was not aware of any allegations of extortion by any party workers. “When I came to the hospital, everyone (who was allegedly attacked) was fine, but when the reporters came, they started getting extra medical attention. This is not right,” Mr Das said. He added that if there was any internal matter, it should be discussed internally and not posted publicly.

“Such an incident where BJP people physically attack their own MLA tells you a lot about the poor condition of their party,” Mamata-Trinamool MLA reacted to this development.

During the legislative assembly election campaign, one of the BJP’s main election promises was to end the extortion and syndicate culture promoted by the Trinamool Congress.

BJP in the fray

A week back on October 26, two BJP MLAs, Kaustav Bagchi and Minister Arjun Singh, got into a spat after Mr. Bagchi threatened to self-immolate if Trinamool Congress leaders were included in the BJP camp by Mr. Singh.

Meanwhile, Mr. Singh rejected Mr. Bagchi’s criticism, saying that he has been in politics for a long time and knows how politics is done. A few days later, on October 30, Mr. Bagchi was confronted with “Go back” slogans in Mr. Singh’s constituency.

A clash also broke out between two BJP factions in Titagarh area of North 24 Parganas district on 30 October. A BJP worker was seriously injured in the clashes that broke out during the public event.
