The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remains hopeful that Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief Mohsin Naqvi will hand over the Asia Cup trophy to India within a “day or two”. More than a month after India’s emphatic win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup final in Dubai, board secretary Devajit Saikia has expressed disappointment that the trophy has still not been handed over to the rightful champions.
Saikia confirmed that the BCCI will raise the issue during the International Cricket Council’s quarterly meeting, which begins on November 4, if the trophy is not sent to the board’s headquarters in Mumbai by then.
Earlier this month, India Today reported that The BCCI was considering referring the matter to the ICC after Mohsin Naqvi claimed that the trophy must be collected personally from the ACC office in the UAE by an Indian player and a board official.
“Yes, we are a bit unhappy that the trophy has not been handed over to us even after a month,” BCCI joint secretary Devajit Saikia told PTI.
Saikia also confirmed that The BCCI has written to the ACC presentation of the trophy. In response, Naqvi remained firm on his stand, insisting that India’s representatives must personally visit the ACC office to collect it. In his letter, the Pakistan board chief added that he was willing to hold a handover ceremony if the trophy was collected in person.
“We are pursuing the matter. We also wrote a letter to the ACC chairman about 10 days ago but there has been no change in their position. They are still keeping the trophy in their custody but we hope it will reach us in a day or two at the BCCI office in Mumbai.”
India beat Pakistan three times in the Asia Cup, including the final, to regain the title of continental champions. However, Naqvi refused to hand over the Asia Cup trophy on the night of the final after the Indian players refused to accept the coveted award from him. India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, has made it clear that it will not accept the trophy from Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s home minister and chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board.
Reportedly offended by India’s attitude, Naqvi ordered an ACC official to remove the trophy from the presentation area. Since that night, the trophy has remained in his possession at the ACC’s Dubai office.
