Former US President Barack Obama spoke for the first time after the assassination of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk and described the violent act as a “terrible tragedy” and warned that the nation was facing an “inflex point”.
Obama, who addressed the shocking murder of the Pennsylvania forum, stressed that political differences could not justify violence.
“And then, when it happens to someone, even if you think they are quoted,” on the other side of the argument, “that’s a threat to all of us and we have to be clear and direct and condemn it,” he said.
“No matter where you are in the political spectrum, what happened to Charlie Kirk was terrible and tragedy.”
Criticism of Trump’s administration
Obama also criticized President Donald Trump and his administration and claimed that extremist views have been reinforced in recent years.
“But I will say that I have no extreme opinions in my White House. I didn’t explain them. I did not balance the weight of the United States government behind them,” Obama said, according to Erie Times-News.
“When we have the weight of the United States Government for extremist views, we have a problem.”
Democracy at the crossroads
The former president framed the incident as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for adherence to democratic values.
“So was your original question:” Are we at an infection point? “We are at an infection point in the sense that we always have to fight for our democracy and we must fight for the values that this country has become envious of the world,” he said.
Personal reflection
While Obama admitted that Kirk did not know personally, he expressed compassion for the victim and his family.
“Look, I obviously didn’t know Charlie Kirka,” he said. “In general, I was aware of some of his ideas. I think these thoughts were bad, but it doesn’t register the fact that what happened was a tragedy and that I would mourn for him and his family.”
Confuses on social media
Hours after Kirk was killed, Obama tweeted the message of sympathy and concerns about the victim’s family.
“We don’t know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of contemptable violence has no place in our democracy.” Michelle and I pray tonight for Charlie’s family, especially his wife Erika and their two little children, ”he wrote at X.
