Newly appointed Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chairman of selectors Habibul Bashar on Tuesday said he wants veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan to return to the country and continue playing for at least two more years with a view to the 2027 ODI World Cup.Shakib, 39, moved to the United States after the Awami League government there led by Sheikh Hasina was ousted following a student uprising in 2024. The interim government banned Shakib from representing Bangladesh. With a new government now in place, Bashar has indicated the selectors are open to his return, although not immediately. He said there is not enough time to consider him for the upcoming home white-ball series against New Zealand starting on April 17.

RCB’s big changes ahead of IPL: New rules, tribute and squad update“There’s not much time left in the New Zealand series and I’m not sure how much Shakib is involved in cricket. From what I know about him, he’s not a guy who comes in tomorrow and plays the day after tomorrow.”“He also needs preparation. It’s not a place for emotion. Definitely, if we are thinking about Shakib, we will be thinking in the long term,” Bashar said, according to Cricbuzz. While Shakib had earlier expressed his desire to play his final Test at home, Bashar said the focus is on a longer plan rather than a short comeback.“I am not thinking about Shakib coming for one series and then leaving. If we get service from him, we will want him to provide it for a long time. Preparation is very important in that respect.”“First of all, it’s definitely in the plans. You see, he’s being talked about for the New Zealand series and that’s why I want him to come ready for a longer period. I think he’s got two years left,” Bashar said.“I want him from a longer-term perspective to at least have that plan where he can play in the 2027 World Cup. So my plans are not for one series,” he added.Bashar, who was part of the national selection committee from 2011 to 2024, recently took over as chairman of the selectors following the formation of a new government earlier this year.
