CANARA Bank employees express the opposition to the alleged prohibition of beef in the office canteen of the bank in Kerala through protest. Demonstrators argued that the bank manager – a Bihar native, who recently took over as a branch – ordered the ban on beef in Kochi.
A protest led by the Indian Federation of Bank Federation in India (Befi) was originally planned against alleged offensive behavior and mental harassment of the manager. After the employees learned of the alleged ban on beef, they redirected their protest. Demonstrators organized a “beef feast”, serving beef and parotta (flat bread type) outside the office.
What do the Union leaders say?
“There is a small dining room and beef is served on selected days. The manager informed the dining room employees that beef should no longer be served. This bank works according to the constitutional instructions. Food is a personal choice. In India, each individual has the right to choose food.
How did political leaders react?
The protest also attracted political attention, and the independent MLA KT Jaleel supported demonstrators. Wrote on Facebook:
“What to wear, what to eat, and what would you think should not decide the superiors. This land is red. The heart of this country is red.
Did Kerala see similar protests before?
In the past, the state has witnessed several protests related to beef and against the Central Government Directive in 2017 limits the sale of cattle for defeat.
