A Bangladeshi student activist, wanted in his country for the killing of a Hindu policeman last year, was detained at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport while trying to flee to a European country, official sources said on Thursday (19 Feb 2026).
Government officials identified the man as Ahmed Raza Hasan Mehdi, who was detained by immigration authorities as he tried to board a plane to a European destination, the source said.
Mehdi, a resident of Habiganj, Bangladesh, faces charges in connection with the August 5, 2024, murder of Sub-Inspector Santosh Chowdhury during the nationwide movement that led to regime change in Bangladesh.
The accused allegedly killed the SI during the attack on the police station. The officer’s body was later found hanging from a tree. The video went viral during the uprising, which caused major uproar in both Bangladesh and India.
After his arrest, the activist was placed in custody and subsequently deported to Bangladesh, the source added.
