Bangladesh found joy in the women’s T20 World Cup berth after the failure of the men’s team

Bangladesh have secured their place in the 2026 Women’s World Cup T20 to be held in England later this year, marking a bright moment after recent setbacks in men’s cricket. The senior men’s team missed the T20 World Cup and boycotted the tournament due to security concerns in India, where they were replaced by Scotland. Meantime, The U19 men’s team failed to make it to the semi-finals at the current under-19 world championship.

However, the women’s team ensured that Bangladesh remained on the global cricket map by qualifying for the T20 World Cup with an impressive campaign in the Super Six stage of the T20 World Cup Global Qualifier 2026 held in Nepal.

Their unbeaten run continued with a 39-run win over Thailand in Mulpani, coupled with a 21-run win by the Netherlands in the DLS against the USA, which confirmed Bangladesh’s top-four finish and a place in the tournament.

In Wednesday’s encounter, Bangladesh batted first and posted 165 for 8 in 20 overs. After losing opener Dilara Akter for a golden duck, Juwairiya Ferdous scored 56 and Shobhana Mostary 59 to form a crucial 110-run partnership for the third wicket that settled the innings.

Thailand’s reply fell short at 126 for 8 with only Nathakan Chantham scoring 44, Naruemol Chaiwai 30 and Nannapat Koncharoenkeat 29 providing resistance. Bangladesh bowling was led by Marufa Akter with three wickets while Ritu Moni and Shorna Akter took two each and Fahima Khatun claimed one.

The Tigresses now lead the Super Six table with six points and a net pace of 1.15. They face Scotland on Friday and finish the stage against the Netherlands in Mulpani on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands made history by qualifying for their first Women’s World T20 Cup. They secured their place by finishing among the top four teams in the global qualifiers, powered by strong performances in the group stage.

The Dutch dominated Group B with key wins, including a 17-run win over Thailand and a narrow two-run triumph against Nepal, showing resilience and composure under pressure. Their team featured experienced players like captain Babette de Leede, who anchored the innings, and match-winners like Isabel van der Woning, whose batting and bowling proved crucial at crucial moments.

The Netherlands earned a spot in the global qualifiers by finishing second in the 2025 European Qualifiers, earning one of the European qualifiers.
