Bangladesh Election Results Live Updates: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is poised to win the Bangladeshi elections and secure a majority of seats. The party has so far won 151 of the 300 constituencies, local media reported.
Early trends also suggested that Jamaat-e-Islami would emerge as the main opposition, securing 43 seats.
The Bangladesh Election Commission has yet to announce the official results. Elections were held in 299 of the country’s 300 constituencies as voting in Sherpur-3 was postponed following the death of an MP candidate.
According to the Dhaka Tribune, BNP leader Mahdi Amin said that party chairman Tarique Rahman had unofficially won from Dhaka-17 and Bogura-6 constituencies. Rahman is likely to become the prime minister of Bangladesh if the BNP wins.
Who is Tariq Rahman?
Tarique Rahman is the son of BNP supremo and former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. He returned to Bangladesh a few months ago after ending 17 years of self-imposed exile in London.
