Bangladesh’s caretaker government on Friday confirmed an incident in which a Hindu man was beaten and killed in Mymensingh. In a Bangla statement on Facebook, Yunus’ press secretary Shafiqul Alam wrote: “There is no place for this kind of violence in New Bangladesh. No one involved in this brutal crime will be freed.”
The Hindu man’s death came amid violent protests across Bangladesh following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi – a prominent leader of a student uprising last year – which ultimately led to the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
What happened to the man?
According to a BBC Bangla report, a mob beat Hindu Dipa Chandra Das to death, tied his body to a tree and set it on fire. Police later arrived at the scene, brought the situation under control and recovered the body.
The victim was a young garment factory worker living as a tenant in Dubalia Para area of Bhaluka Upazila. “At around 9pm on Thursday, an enraged mob caught him and beat him to death, accusing him of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet. The body was then set on fire,” duty officer Mia told BBC Bangla.
According to officials, the victim’s body has been sent to the mortuary at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
No case has yet been filed in connection with the incident.

– After Hadi’s death, protests demanding “justice” broke out in Dhaka and several other cities. During the riots, the offices of two media houses – The Daily Star and Prothom Alo – were torched.
— The former residence of Bangladesh’s founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which was demolished earlier this year in February, was also set on fire at Dhanmondi 32 on Friday.
