
Bangalore University has directed principals of its affiliated colleges to promote their courses, campuses and facilities through social media campaigns and visits to nearby pre-university (PU) colleges to attract students for various degree programmes.
Besides, a decision was taken at the recent extraordinary meeting of the university’s syndicate to emphasize skill development and infrastructure, including introduction of new courses to attract students.
Steps to increase adoption
There are a total of 284 government, aided and private colleges under the jurisdiction of Bangalore University with about 40,000 seats, including Arts, Commerce, Science and Management. Of these, however, only about 28,000 to 30,000 places are filled annually.
However, the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education across the country is 28% and the Union and State Governments have set a target of increasing it to 50% GER by 2035. To achieve this target, increasing enrollment in higher education is essential.
“Due to various reasons, the total number of approved admissions for courses in the affiliated colleges of our university are not filled. More than 10,000 seats remain vacant every year. In this regard, a meeting was recently convened with the principals of all the leading colleges. During this time, it was felt that admissions could improve,” it said, adding that they will promote their colleges, courses on social media and Jayakara facilities available. “Furthermore, there are many government colleges within our reach and there are no websites or social media platforms to promote these colleges. In this context, this year the university has decided to focus more on social media promotion to attract students,” he added.
“Today’s generation is using social media more. So if students are informed about colleges and courses through social media, it will reach them faster. Therefore, all colleges have been advised to open Facebook, ‘X’ and Instagram accounts in addition to promoting courses through their websites. They have been advised to send information to parents and student groups on WhatsApp. Additionally, if they link to our university website, we will also promote the colleges.
Promotion at PU universities
Along with social media promotion, Bangalore University has instructed its affiliated schools to go to PU colleges to promote and convince students.
“Vocational colleges have already started a campaign for admission in all PU colleges. However, arts, science and commerce students are mostly enrolling in colleges under our jurisdiction. Therefore, principals of all colleges have been advised to go to their nearest PU colleges and convince students by advertising through flyers. This will help students who are interested in the courses to make their decision early,” explained Dr.yara Jaak Dr.
He further said that in order to increase the number of admissions in the colleges, all their affiliated colleges have been advised to start the admission process soon. “If admissions are delayed, students will turn to other colleges. Hence, it has been advised to complete the admission process without waiting for the completion of admissions to professional courses. This will help us conduct diploma semester exams on time and provide results on time,” he added.
Syndicate meeting
In the recent extraordinary meeting of the Syndicate, the university decided to take appropriate steps to increase the number of admissions.
According to the report of the local investigation commissions of the university, it was recommended to build the basic infrastructure and correct the deficiencies in the universities within three months.
In addition, a decision was taken to update the curriculum, vocational training and skill development in line with industrial and technological developments.
