In a unique step, Bangalore University decided to provide life insurance and health insurance to all students who study on their campus Jnana Bharathi. The decision in this sense was taken at a recent meeting of the university syndicate. The decision will be made from the academic year 2025-26.
There are a total of 54 departments related to various university, postgraduate and Ph.D. Programs and more than 4,000 students in the Jnana Bharathi campus. In addition, the Syndicate ordered that all students of associated university university university should be registered for insurance under Pradhan Mantri Jan Surraksha Yojana.
Why the initiative
Most students studying at Bangalore University come from rural areas and belong to economically and socially weaker sections. Two main roads pass through the campus of Jnana Bharathi: One of the Mysuru road towards Ullal and the other from Nagarbavi towards Kengeri. These roads are permanently overloaded by operation and accidents are frequent; As a result, students are often injured in these incidents.
A postgraduate student died in a bus accident two years ago. When such an accident occurs, students and their parents are provided with compensation from the university funds that will now cover the insurance.
Decision in 2017
In 2017, Bangalore University decided to provide health insurance to all its students. In this respect, it also created an expert committee. The committee discussed and submitted a report on the total amount of health insurance, including the student’s share and the university’s share. But it wasn’t implemented.
However, students existed a health insurance requirement. Students were registered as part of the “Ayushman Bharat” scheme in 2024-25 and Ayushman cards were issued. As there is limited coverage within this system, the university has decided to provide additional life insurance facilities and health insurance to improve coverage.
In an interview with the Hindu Mrs. Jayakara, Vice -Rector of the University, she said: “Most of our students come from economically weaker families. They cannot afford life insurance and health insurance. So far, compensation from the university’s accumulated fund has become a burden.
Implementation
The university decided to include the amount of insurance premium with annual fees paid by students. “I ordered financial officials to discuss and inform about the amount of insurance to be set for students. The insurance system will be introduced without burdening students by obtaining help from the state government,” Jayakara.
Students welcome movement
The students welcomed this initiative, but asked for an insurance premium that would not be a burden on them.
“The decision of our university to provide insurance facilities for students’s safety is commendable.
