
“Back to school”, a project launched by the Kozhikode Municipal Police helped more than 50 children who had previously left school for various reasons to continue their studies in the new academic year. Most of the 54 students are boys who have been found through a survey and taken over to schools with the support of the Ministry of Education and various other voluntary organizations.
The project, which claimed to be the first such initiative in the state, has become a reality under the Social Police division of the Kozhikode Municipal Police. The data collected from the Office of the Deputy Director of Education helped the police identify the school premature ending of school attendance and solve their developmental needs to restore education.
“There were 68 students who had left schools for various reasons in recent years. They were financially backward children and those who their parents did not carefully care about,” said VM Abdul Wahab, other police guards and node officer of the project. He added efforts to help the remaining 14 students to continue their education.
The project coordinators confirmed that the “Back to School” initiative would also expand support for children of migrating workers. They said that a survey was going to verify the details of several other children who allegedly left the school with the claim that their parents wanted to return to their home states.
Police sources said that “hopes” (helping others to promote education), a system initiated by the police in 2017 to support education of school early school attendance with a separate educational center and independent coaching, was also combined with the “Back to School” initiative. This year there would be a part of hope, adding seven students.
More than 500 students were lucky enough to continue their studies and participate in qualifying exams in the past. Some students passed SSLC and plus two exams depending on the equivalent programs implemented with the support of nine trained teachers.
Former coach associated with the project said that Hope helped more than 100 students to complete various graduation. “Several of them later completed technical courses and ensured employment with leading companies. Many of them have achieved their dream work in the army. To be successful in life, we pass on training in life skills, soft skills and communication,” he stressed.
