
The Government of Jamm and Kashmir has banned 25 books and claimed to support “false narrative and Art Nouveau” in the Union. Forbidden titles include Azadi author Arundhati Roy, Kashmir dispute 1947–2012 by constitutional expert AG Noorani and Politololian scientist Sumantra Bose’s Kashmir at the crossroads and attacked countries.
According to the announcement issued by the home department on Tuesday, August 5, the ban was based on “trusted evidence” that such a content – often presented as a historical or political analysis – contributed to “violence in participation in youth and terrorism”.
“This literature would deeply affect the psyche of youth by promoting the culture of complaints, victims and terrorist heroism. Some of the means by which these literature contributed to the radicalization of youth in J&K, including distortion of historical facts, terrorists, accusations of security forces, religious radicalization, promotion, violence.” Reading, reading, reading, reading and terroristics.
The government has declared 25 books published by various publishing houses – including Routledge, Stanford University Press and Oxford University Press – like “failed” according to section 98 Bhartiya Nagarik Surraksha Sanhit (BNSS), 2023.
Among the authors whose books were banned, are Ag Nooras, Sumatra Bose, Arundhati Roy, Maulan Maududi, Pankaj Misra, Victoria Schofield, Stephen P Cohen, Hasan Ul Ban, David Devdas, Hafsa Kanjwal and others. Books were published by some important houses, including Oxford University Press, Routledge, Stanford University Press, University of Pennsylvania Press, Harper Collins, Cambridge University Press, Penguin India and other publishing houses
According to the announcement, the books were “found to excite Art Nouveau and threaten the sovereignty and integrity of India”, causing provisions according to sections 152, 196 and 197 Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
While section 98 BNSS 2023 seizes the government to declare certain publications as “forfeited”, sections 152, 196 and 197 BNS 2023 concern “attack without serious provocation”, “obstacle to civil servants” and “inability to help them legally bound”.
The government ordered the forfeiture of 25 books along with all copies and related documents.
