The Ayya Vaikunda Swami memorial in the state capital will be a strong bulwark against attempts to distort history by protecting the values of social reform, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said.
He was speaking after laying the foundation stone of a memorial to be built near the Press Club here under the auspices of the culture department with the help of the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) at a cost of ₹ 3.16 crore.
The Chief Minister pointed out that Ayya Vaikunda Swami was among the most prominent names who laid the foundations of the social reform movement. His life and struggles were an answer to those who claimed that the old days, when backsliding customs were common, were good. He subscribed to the message of humanity when there was untouchability.
The Samathwa Samajam founded by him helped create social awareness that all people are equal. She fought against feudal exploitation and imperialism and introduced the concept of Panthibhojanam (inter-caste dining), the Chief Minister said.
He emphasized the need to strengthen the culture of humanity, love and brotherhood established by the leaders of the social reform movement. At the same time, those who want to break the progressive society of Kerala should defend themselves. The memorial would be an inspiration for efforts in this direction, Mr. Vijayan said.
Balaprajapathi Adigalar, head of the Ayya Vaikunda Swami Math at Swamithope in Kanyakumari, presented the memento to the Chief Minister. The event was chaired by Culture Minister Saji Cherian.
