Ayodhya: A 32-year-old woman and her newborn baby died allegedly due to medical negligence after the delivery was performed by “untrained staff” at a private hospital, with a doctor allegedly guiding the procedure over the phone, officials and family members said on Thursday.
They said the incident took place late on Tuesday night in Faizabad, after which the health department closed the hospital and started an investigation, according to PTI.
What happened?
Suresh Yadav, a resident of Beniganj, said his wife Soni Yadav was admitted to Maa Parmeshwari Devi Memorial Hospital after she developed labor pains. He added that attending physician Anjali Shrivastava initially told them that her condition was normal.
“After about half an hour, the staff handed over the baby saying that it was not breathing. When we took the newborn to a nearby doctor, it was declared dead. After returning, we were told that my wife’s condition had deteriorated. She was then shifted to another hospital where she was also declared dead,” claimed Yadav.
The family claimed that a doctor was absent during the birth, which was instead performed by a staff member who allegedly received instructions over the phone. The husband claimed that no qualified doctor was present at the time, accusing the hospital of gross negligence.
After a complaint, a team from the health department headed by another chief physician, Dr. Ashutosh Shrivastava inspected the hospital.
During the inspection, no doctor or trained medical personnel were found in the premises. According to ACMO, a man identified as Mahesh Singh was found claiming to be the manager of the hospital.
“Three women who had undergone caesarean sections were also admitted there and their care was left to the supervisor,” ACMO mentioned.
He added that the hospital’s records were incomplete, the doctor’s credentials were not submitted and the management of medical waste was found to be inadequate.
While stating that the doctor was not found, the ACMO said, “The hospital has been sealed and the admitted patients have been shifted to the district women’s hospital. Further investigation is underway and an FIR will be registered if negligence is found.”
Suresh Yadav said he married Soni, a resident of Mukimpur in Inayat Nagar, in April last year and the couple is expecting their first child.
“Our happiness has been destroyed due to the negligence of the hospital,” he said, demanding strict action against those responsible.
